A Joyful Habit

Describe one habit that brings you joy.

Reading the Bible privately is a habit I am learning to cultivate. God brings me peace, wisdom, conviction, understanding and more when I quietly read.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. ~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17

It is a balm for my soul.

It brings me joy!

It can bring you joy too!

There is nothing wrong with having someone else read to you, or listening to the Bible narrated on your phone while you work, or listening to a pastor preach a sermon, etc. – of course! These are all good things.

But there is something so simple, so quiet, so reflective when we read alone. It’s a habit that is good for your soul.

Get cozy if you want! While some prefer reading their Bible on an electronic device (and that is fine) I personally prefer an ‘actual’ book that I can underline in, etc.

Ideally, we should read privately each day. In my private reading, I go book to book literally in order – although there are times I choose something out of order. I am currently in 1 Samuel, reading about David hiding from Saul. He loved Saul & Saul was trying to kill him.

Keep in mind, in full transparency, I don’t live up to reading privately daily, perfectly. That is why I said I am learning to cultivate this joyful habit. Often in life, we deny ourselves good things – this is due to the battle with our flesh.

I read to my children daily, my husband reads to us daily, and all of this is GOOD. But, again, I can’t stress enough, private reading is medicine for your soul!!

Try it and cultivate your own habit ~ enJOY!

But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. ~Matthew 6:6
